6 Myths and Misconceptions Surrounding Hypnosis

There are a number of negative myths and misconceptions about hypnosis floating around out there.  These beliefs keep people from ever trying this extraordinary life improvement tool.

Hypnosis is actually an incredibly powerful field that has made tremendous positive changes in people’s lives.  But, with power comes nay sayers who start myths out of ignorance and fear.

Below you will find 6 of some of the most common myths and misconceptions that encircle the field of hypnosis.

Myth #1 – You can get “stuck” in a hypnotic trance.

No one has ever gotten “stuck’ in hypnosis.  There is absolutely no danger whatsoever of someone not coming out of a trance.  If you were to hypnotize someone and then leave, they would naturally convert from a trance to natural sleep and then awaken feeling very rested.

Myth #2 – “Smart” people can’t be hypnotized.

In reality experience shows that intelligent people who have a creative mind make the best hypnosis subjects because they don’t limit their imaginations about what is possible.  They can usually concentrate and focus better on the suggestions being made.

Myth #3 – Hypnosis allows someone else to control your mind and you can become like a puppet.

The only person who has absolute control over your mind is you.  A hypnotist cannot make you do anything against your will or against your morals.

Myth #4 – You have to be asleep in order to be hypnotized.

With hypnosis you are simply deeply relaxed, highly focused, and in a suggestible state.  You are still conscious and aware of your surroundings, although because you are so deeply relaxed you may fall asleep and still benefit from hypnosis. In fact you can experience the benefits of hypnosis in your own home with hypnosis audios and remain awake the entire time or slip into a restful sleep.

Myth #5 – You won’t remember anything from the hypnotic trance.

As a general rule you will remember everything that happens while in a hypnotic trance because you are still conscious.  However, on some occasions, a hypnotist may suggest that you forget everything in the session and in that case you wouldn’t remember.

Myth #6 – You will reveal your deepest, darkest secrets.

As I said before, you are in complete control of your own mind.  Therefore, you won’t reveal anything you don’t want others to know.

There are many more misconceptions about hypnosis floating around out there, but these 6 are some of the most common and widely spread.
